Agony of Da Feet

IMG_0247
The Iron Kahuna's view for the past 48 hours.

On Friday, the Iron Kahuna experienced his first surgery under general anesthetic. He needed to get the Morton's Neuroma removed from both his feet. His wide boats, combined with narrow shoes and repetitive use, caused him to develop scar tissue on his nerve endings between his third and fourth toes. The result: numbness of his toes and occasionally searing pain. First, he thought his basketball career was over. Then, his promising professional career as a triathlete.

But the good doctor (HMO's best!) removed both neuromas on Friday, leaving the Kahuna with two very, very sore feet and a reluctant nurse in Mrs. Kahuna (though she never complains!). The good news: recovery is expected to be fairly swift (4 to 6 weeks), just in time for training for Ironman Arizona.

The Kahuna spent the weekend in an unusual position: flat on his back with both feet in the air. He can't say it was an unpleasant experience. But after a few hours, the boredom bored in, and he would have given anything to be able to run, swim or bike. As consolation, he tried to follow Commodore during the spring version of Ironman Arizona. Can someone please get the "track an athlete" feature on IronmanLive to work on effing race day? Most of the time, the web address turned up nothing but "fatal errors."

A slightly different view.

It will take a few more weeks of inactivity to make sure the Kahuna's feet are healed properly. In the meantime, if health permits, he'll be doing some weightlifting and Pilates. The Kahuna WILL NOT GO SOFT!

This will also mean that he will return to the water soon, something he's avoided since last season. The Kahuna can swim like a fish, but his youth spent swimming lap after boring lap has made him weary of the pool. He'll need to return to his natural habitat, especially if he's going to finish Ironman Arizona. But it won't be a glorious homecoming. It will be a union of convenience.

The surgery doesn't sound too pleasant, but the home made "socks" look comfy. Good luck and heres to a speedy recovery.

Hope you bounce back quickly Kahuna.
I agree about the Ironman online coverage, it leaves a lot to be desired....but is better than nothing I suppose.

My good buddy's husband had that surgery...one at a TIME...and I know how unpleasant it is. Ugh. Thinking of you and sending you good recovery wishes! Hang in there Kahuna! :)

Speedy recovery! (They could have at least given you green or pink ace bandages to make things a little more interesting!)

Good luck on the recovery. And I couldn't agree more re: the Ironmanlive site on race day. Seriously, have you ever seen a site that crashes more often when it's needed most. In short, it's worthless.

I wish Ironman would just man up and get a live TV feed for race days....it would cut down web traffic to their site (those streaming the finish line), so the other functions would work.

I'm sure they hire out ESPN 16 (or however many channels they are up to now) for showing the finish line of IM races live.

Glad to hear that the procedure went well. I was curious so I went to check out the procedure.. Interesting... Yeah, I am pretty much fed up with Ironman as well with their "live" online feeds, and their athlete tracker. You look at all of these extreme sports that have made it today, and it is because a sports station or a compnay decided to bone up some cash and get their events on TV... Think of it... X Games anyone???? Please tell me with the exceptions of the snowboard, bike, skateboard, and snowmobile companies that there are companies involved in triathlon with MUCH BIGGER POCKET BOOKS!!! Put it towards live TV coverage for crying out loud!

I was wondering how you were doing, at least the hard part is over with. Take it easy. Water jogging isn't so bad, and I imagine you can swim in the ocean, I hear an afternoon with the boys at the beach calling!

Enough with the pictures of your feet :-) At least this time there were bandages on them. Hope you are back in the pool, on the bike and on your feet as soon as possible.
