A first-person about sharks, etc.

Here's a first-person story the Iron Kahuna produced today for his newspaper.

On behalf of all triathletes, thanks for writing that. And yes, we should all think of Dave this weekend during our swims. I know I will.

great writing, kahuna!! i'm so over the shark frenzy, and you're right, we're more likely to get killed in a car accident than by a shark. there's also bears in the forest, snakes in the desert, and lions in the jungle. so do we just stay home and never live life??

i love this sport and i love the ocean as it is the great equalizer as mitch thrower expressed. the shear massiveness of a wave alone can turn everything around in an instant, and i have the utmost respect for that.

the tri community has definitely suffered a loss today, and i will be thinking of dr. david martin, his family and friends as i knock out my 2 mile ocean swim sunday.

Nicely done...
And the next time I am in salt water I will think of Mr. Martin. Doing what he loved to do.

Last weekend two local cyclists were almost killed when an inattentive driver ran them down (at 50mph) from behind. When I heard about this shark attack taking the life of a fellow triathlete, I decided that perhaps I'd run indoors, this weekend.

Whether it's the swim, the bike, or the run, we place our lives into the hands of others every time we walk out the door for a race or training session. Monica is right. There are risks. The risks associated with NOT doing what we do are greater.

Now, I mean this as a totally legitimate question. I am not making light of this man or his death.

Was he wearing a wetsuit? If so would the shark see a seal or something like that? It's unusual to happen, so then why did it happen?

RIP Dave

may dave rest in peace.
I am hoping he had a very fast transition time from earthly existence to that tri in heaven...
